Born in Ukraine, Sonia grew up in St. Peterburg and studied in Germany and France, where he met her future husband Robert Delaunay. Initially influenced by Impressionism and Fauvism, Sonia and Robert Delaunay sooned developed their own style – the Orphism – based on the juxtaposition of color forms. Sonia extended the Orphism principles to all arts and crafts from threatre design to fabrics and textiles, fashion and ceramics before returning to painting in 1930 and joining the Abstraction-Création movement few months later. In 1937 she and Robert collaborated to the Paris International Exhibition creating large murals. After her husband’s death she continued to work both as painter and designer until her death
