Collein studied in Darmstadt before moving to Dessau to attend the Bauhaus foundation course under Moholy-Nagy. He also took part in workshops under Breuer, Albers, Klee, Kandinsky and Meyer. From Bauhaus he travelled to Vienna, Munich and Berlin. After WWII he returned to Berlin to work in the Planning and Building Department and worked as Professor of the Bauakademie der DDR. He co-authored The sixteen Principles of Urban Design, the reference publication for all architecture projects in the DDR until 1955.
